Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans works with Original Medicare and will help pay for some of your health care costs that Original Medicare won’t cover. These are things like;

  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles

Medicare Supplemental Insurance is Medigap Insurance

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans is the same thing as Medigap Insurance Plans. Medigap is a type of private health insurance that will help you pay what Original Medicare doesn’t cover. It’s called “Medigap” because it covers the Medicare coverage gaps and saves Medicare recipients from the exposure to expensive medical bills.

do i need a medicare supplement policy?

Original Medicare can provide excellent protection for you basic health care needs and costs.

Did you know that Original Medicare doesn’t provide 100% coverage and won’t cover all of your medical expenses? You first need to meet your Part B Deductible and then Medicare will cover 80% of all your Medicare approved health care costs.

You are responsible for the other 20%. This is where a Medicare Supplement policy (Medigap) will help you. Your Medigap policy provides supplemental coverage and fills in the gaps. In other words, it protects you from the potential risk of unexpected high medical bills.

Comparing Medicare Plans is Easy

Medicare Supplement PlansThere are 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans that you can choose from. These Medigap plans and their benefits are classified by plan letters A through N.  The current Medigap Plans that are available are A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Each of these Medigap plans are offered and sold by a variety of insurance companies.

How to compare medicare supplement plans?

All Medigap plans that begin with the same plan letter will provide you the SAME benefits. You get the same benefits regardless of the Medigap insurance company that you buy it from.

Expert Tip
COST is the only difference between Medicare Supplement policies that are sold with the same plan letter by different insurance companies.

In other words, Plan G from one company will have the exact same benefits as Plan G from a competing company. The only difference between the two Plan G policies will be the cost. Here are the benefits for Medicare Supplement Plans A – N:

* Plans F and G also offer a high-deductible plan in some states (Plan F isn’t available to people new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.) If you get the high-deductible option, you must pay for Medicare-covered costs (coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles) up to the deductible amount.

** Plans K and L show how much they’ll pay for approved services before you meet your out-of-pocket yearly limit and your Part B deductible. After you meet these amounts, the plan will pay 100% of your costs for approved services for the rest of the calendar year.

*** Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance, except for a Copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in an inpatient admission.

When should I buy a medicare supplement?

Medicare Supplement plans are available to purchase throughout the year to anyone who has Medicare. You can start shopping for a Medigap plan up to 6 months prior to your 65th birthday and you’re signed up for Medicare Part B. It’s very common for people to pick their Medicare Supplement plan before turning 65 so they don’t have a gap in health care coverage.
