How To Find the Right Medicare Part D Plan?

By:Michael Quinn Published onOctober 30, 2016June 11, 2026 Updated onJune 11, 2026

Why you Should Find the Right Medicare Part D plan

So, why is it important to use Medicare’s Plan Finder Tool instead of buying the Part D plan your friend, spouse, or neighbor uses? Well, there are more than 20 part D plans available and they’re not a one size fits all type of insurance coverage. So, just because your friend likes their Part D plan, doesn’t mean it’s a good fit for your prescriptions.

In this article we’ll discuss:
  • Why you Should Find the Right Medicare Part D Plan
  • Steps to Find the Right Medicare Part D Plan

The point is to find the right Medicare Part D plan that covers your existing medications for the least amount of money. Thankfully, Medicare’s database will help you do that.

And, Medicare’s online tool provides you with an annual estimate of costs based on your medications. This allows you to make informed decisions about your Part D Plan.

Steps to Find the Right Medicare Part D Plan

There are four easy steps when using Medicare’s Plan Finder Tool. First, visit Medicare.gov. Then, you’ll select the ‘Find Health and Drug Plans’ button, enter only your zip code, and follow the steps provided:

  1. Give Medicare basic information about your coverage. You don’t have to provide any personal information.
  2. Enter your mediations. You might want to gather them in one location, so you don’t forget any.
  3. Choose two preferred pharmacies.
  4. Select the Medicare plan results you want to view. Which is typically. ‘Prescription Drug Coverage with Original Medicare’.

Compare Medicare Part D Plans

This is where you get to view all the Medicare Part D plans available in your area. Most of the time, the automatic default listed on the plan results is for Medicare plans with the lowest estimated annual costs. This makes it easy to compare the lowest priced plans.

But, if you want more information then what’s provided in the initial plan result, you can select “print comparison report”. This will give you detailed information regarding costs during:

  • Deductible
  • Initial Coverage Level
  • Coverage gap (Donut Hole)
  • Catastrophic Coverage

Choose the Right Medicare Part D Plan and Enroll

Once you’ve decided on a Part D plan, you can enroll through Medicare’s Plan Finder tool. Simply find your plan and select enroll. You will have to provide your Medicare number during the enrollment process. However, if you’re not comfortable inputting your Medicare number online, you can call Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE. Make sure you enroll properly to avoid the Part D Penalty.
